History

The original Tuscumbia Railway
Company, TRC, was incorporated
on January 16, 1830 as possibly the fourth incorporated railroad in the
United States. This was the first railroad west of the Alleghany
Mountains making Tuscumbia America’s First Frontier Railroad Town. The
original track ran from the downtown area of Tuscumbia to the river
landing, 2.1 miles away. The track was constructed with oak 5 x 7
stringers covered with a piece of strap iron, 2 inches by ½ inch. The
ties were made of cedar on 5 feet centers. Horses were used to supply
the power.
